Who am I?

I’m Sam, I am a Broadcast Network Engineer who specialises in system design and IP/web based integrations. Currently staff at NEP UK, formerly at Arena. I have been freelancing in broadcast for 6 years and in web dev for 10.

I have been enthralled in the broadcast world for the last 8 years, kick started by joining the student TV Station StagTV. This ultimately led me away from pursing a career in Maths and Theoretical Physics and into the world of broadcast engineering. Because of this I changed course onto the Film and Boradcast Engineering course at Surrey (A sister course to the Tonemesiter course) which led me to a Bsc and IEng.

I graduated from the University of Surrey in 2020 just as Covid 19 started reshaping the world. I took this as an oppertunity to apply my experience with broadcast and web-technology to work on virtual and hybrid events. I spend the following 12 months working part time for the University running their TV Studio and upgrading it with an extensive fibre network to all the main events and reocrding spaces across the Surrey campus and creating and implementing systems for remote guest capture and streaming, clean feed generation, NDI integrations and more.

When I was not working for the Univeristy I freelanced, working on virtual festivals, pannel shows, writing software packages e,g, online voting systems, an online graphical credits editor and playout engine, GFX packages, screen capture and high volume remote guest to local SDI/NDI systems and more!

As I mentioned above, I do a lot of webdev and software development. My family has a family owned and run software company and has done since I was an infant, so I grew up with technology and code! I wrote my first bits of code in secondary school writing mods for games and eventually moved on to web dev. From there I started making websites left right and center. Now I use these skills to create control panels, monitoring systems and more to link together and control broadcast equipment.

I now work in the OB industry, previously at ArenaTV as a Projects and IP engineer. Now I am at NEP as a Boradcast Network Engineer. It’s hard to say what I do on a day to day basis, but boradly speaking it ranges from classic gaurantee engineering to builing and working IP (2110 primarily) systems to engineering remote productions. Previously I worked at ExpenSys (www.expensys.com) as their UI designer and integrations specialist, I ocasionally still consult for them.

I have a few examples of some of my work here on my website, most of my completed code projects can be found on my github (https://github.com/Xeue). For any questions or just general curiosity about me or my projects you can email me at [email protected].

P.S Please forgive my use of wordpress for this site, I don’t normally use it but it’s very convenient…
